Restructuring specialists Hilco have agreed a deal to save music and film retailer HMV which includes the East Street Chichester branch.

Chichester Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Chairman, Farid Ahmed, said: “Thank goodness that this has saved another big store on East Street from becoming another large empty frontage.”

The company has been in administration since the beginning of the year after struggling in the face of online competition.

Hilco has agreed to purchase 132 HMV shops, in a deal that could secure 2,500 jobs.

HMV's Chichester store was amongst those that had been earmarked for closure but will now stay open.

Comment from our editor: Let’s hope they see sense and let customers listen to music before buying on headphones like they used to – this simple USP seems to so effectively differentiate from itunes yet they stopped offering the service – crazy!
