West Sussex County Council, in partnership with landowners, manages over 4,000km of public rights of way. For day-to-day management purposes the county is divided into 6 areas, each the responsibility of an Access Ranger. This post looks after rights of way in parishes mainly around Midhurst and down to the coast at Bognor Regis (Area 3). Access Rangers, assisted by volunteers, undertake regular inspections of the rights of way in their area, identifying work for the maintenance contractor to carry out and any other issues. Access Rangers work with landowners to ensure they undertake work they are responsible for, taking enforcing action where necessary. The Volunteer Co-ordinator manages the volunteers with support from the Access Rangers.

You will respond to customer enquiries, including planning application consultations, and investigate reported problems, achieving solutions where possible. An important part of the role is building and developing local partnerships including with parish councils, community/user groups and landowners. You will deliver small-scale practical maintenance works with contractors or volunteers, and through the implementation of access and rights of way legislation. You will use Rights of Way specific software (CAMS / ArcMap GIS) to record and manage all issues.

You will provide advice and guidance to a range of customers, including landowners and managers, and community groups on access issues. The work involves occasionally dealing with people with strongly conflicting interests where tact and diplomacy are essential.

The role is split approximately 2/3 office and 1/3 site. There is a significant amount of lone working and up to 6 hours of walking a day. Prioritising and organising workloads is a fundamental part of the role. You will be required to work occasional evenings and weekends.
