Are you passionate about working in publishing? Do you have an interest in the chemical or biological sciences? We are looking for a Publishing Assistant to work within the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) Editorial Services.

This position will provide editorial and administrative support to SCI’s scholarly, peer-reviewed scientific journals. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting the team in order to ensure a smooth flow of manuscripts into production.

The Publishing Assistant will report in to the Executive Commissioning Editor, and will work closely with the other members of the editorial office, offering administrative support when needed to ensure the successful running of the journals. Key duties are to monitor the journal mailboxes on a daily basis and answer queries from authors, editors and referees in a timely manner. Monitor new submissions to our journals using the software ScholarOne, and assist in co-ordinating the Editorial Board meetings.

 

Selection criteria

  • Prior publishing experience is not essential for this role but applicants must demonstrate an interest in scientific journal publishing and the peer review process
  • A degree in a scientific field is desirable but demonstrating an interest or an understanding of the portfolio and subject is essential
  • The ideal candidate will be proactive, well organised and able to work with colleagues to achieve tasks to set deadlines
  • They will need to have excellent verbal and written communication skills and an eye for detail
  • Is able to use PC software (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation) to save time and optimize personal and/or departmental productivity
  • Has the ability to multi task and manage projects with minimal guidance.
  • Has the ability to maintain and build good relationships both externally in terms of author liaison and internally with the team.
