The Communar is responsible for the finances, administration, planning and operation of the Cathedral, its staff, property and commercial activities.
Requirements of this busy, varied and interesting position include the ability to get on with others, common sense, resourcefulness, patience, willingness to promote the good name of the Cathedral and a readiness to work on a flexible basis to meet the requirements of the post. Computer literacy and an understanding of finance and budgeting are essential whilst an interest in ancient buildings would be desirable. An expanded person specification is attached and an enhanced CRB clearance will be required before the successful candidate assumes his/her duties.
Since the Dean and Chapter (the governing body of the Cathedral) are also the Trustees of St Mary's Hospital, an almshouse providing sheltered housing, the Communar acts as Clerk to the Trustees and as the general administrator of this charity. Other duties involve administering two chorister bursary funds and acting as the managing director of Chichester Cathedral Enterprises Ltd, the trading arm of the Cathedral. This long-term appointment is wide-ranging and demanding but offers considerable job satisfaction.
The successful applicant will be a member of Chapter and must therefore be a communicant member of the Church of England or a Church in full communion with the Church of England. He/she will be expected to live in an attractive, 15th Century, four bedroomed house in the Cathedral Close, which will be provided free of rent and of charges for electricity and gas. The salary offered is £51,000, the leave allowance is 30 days and a contributory pension scheme will be available.
